Singer Sewing Machines: A Background

The Singer company was started in 1850 when Isaac Singer invented the world’s first practical sewing machine. It wasn’t until 1851, when he got a patent for that sewing machine, that the name Singer became so synonymous with sewing. Since then the company has been tightly intertwined in the industry. The company’s innovative spirit seems to go hand in hand with firsts. Throughout Singers growth they have seen lots of firsts in the sewing machine world. This includes the world’s first electronic sewing machines and the world’s first zig-zag machine. For those with more of a technical background they were also the world’s first sewing assistant app for mobile devices. Just to name a few. Singer seems to be not only a practical company but a creative and innovative one that strives to be a leader in the sewing industry world wide. They are a truly respected brand that is passionate about inspiring sewers of all levels everywhere.Since their beginning the Singer brand has become a household name that is determined to help sewers express themselves creatively through their craft and have managed to so amazingly. Their machines can cover everything from quilting and sewing to embroidery and much more.

My Favourite Features of The Singer 4411

  • Instructional Video: The Singer 4411 comes with an instructional video to help anyone and everyone figure out how to properly use the machine to it’s abilities. The video will go through the basics of how to use the machine such as how you can select your desired stitching, how you can create functional buttonholes, and changing your needle. After watching the video you will know everything about the machine.
  • Singer Sewing Assistant App: With the machine you can also download the Singer Sewing Assistant app to a mobile device and it will allow you to learn even more about your machine. The app will teach you about the parts of you machine along with how to easily set it up and use it. The app will provide you with any information that you will need to know about your sewing machine.
  • Built in Stitches: This model comes with 11 different built in stitches to choose from for your sewing needs. Not only will you have your basic selection for nondescript projects but you will have decorative sewing stitches as well for all of your more personalized and custom projects.
  • Four Step Buttonholes: This machine allows you to create four step buttonholes that are perfect and functional everytime. The four steps are clear and easy to follow, they’re shown on the stitch selector dial for easy convenience.  The four step buttonholes are simple to make and the display walking you through every step eliminates the possibility of mixing up your steps.
  • Top Drop in Bobbin: The top drop in bobbin is not only easy to thread but also easy to see. It is transparent to insure that you can monitor your thread supply and see when you are running low. This also allows you to check how much thread you have before you start a project so that you don’t run out of it in the middle of a seam. I’ve found that it is best to check both before and after you start a sewing session, that way you know exactly how much you have and how much more sewing you will be able to complete before re-threading your bobbin.
  • Drop Feed: This one is especially great for quilters. The feed teeth can be lowered to enable you to sew buttons or for free motion sewing if you wish. All you have to do is slide the Drop Feed lever that lowers the teeth and you’re good to go. Simple slide the lever back and turn it one complete turn to raise the feed teeth back up again.

The Presser Foot

The presser foot it is easily adjustable. You can set it as high as it will go to make your projects move along more quickly or lower it all the way down to enable you provide the maximum amount of pressure on your projects. For thicker or heavier projects using the setting that is about ½” would benefit you and your project. However, you should keep in mind that you shouldn’t attempt to sew through anything too thick. The reason being that should you have the presser foot too high this will cause the top tension to disengage and your thread will jam.You can also adjust it so that the fabric you are using doesn’t pucker. If you are sewing on fabrics that are very lightweight and you don’t need as much pressure. This model comes with four feet to fit your sewing needs.

The Pedal Foot

The foot pedal can take some time to get use to.Getting used to the speed of the machine will require some practice using the foot pedal until you feel comfortable sewing both quickly and slowly. In order to get used to the machine and the foot pedal, I would recommend starting on a simple projects that doesn’t require quite as much effort on your part. While the pedal may be a bit sensitive, you can modify it to be less sensitive. The cord for the Singer 4411 is a reasonable length and is heavy duty which is a welcomed feature.

Ease of Setup

The Singer 4411 comes with clear instructions to set it up, it is easy and very simple. The process of setting up shouldn’t take you too long provided that you have a space set up for it. While the machine is relatively easy to use and set up, it is more of an experienced sewers machine than that of a newbie sewer.

Machine Durability

The Singer 4411 is a very durable computerized machine sewing machine. The metal frame allows it to handle everyday bumps and knocks without any real damage while also providing the machine with rigid support. The machine is relatively versatile and can be moved from here to there with relative ease. Moving the machine around with you on the go shouldn’t cause and real wear.

Machine Noise

The Singer 4411 can be a bit loud due to its speed but it is a relatively quiet machine when you consider the power behind it. Unfortunately I would not recommend sewing at nighttime when the kids are asleep,  unless, of course,  they are very sound sleepers or you are lucky enough to have a sewing area at the other end of the house. One thing you can do to help minimize the noise is make sure you have a sturdy table to sew on, while it doesn’t make the machine itself quieter it does keep down the noise that is made during the sewing process.

The Thread Tension

With this model you can adjust your thread tension.Remember that if you are facing issues when it comes to thread tension, there could be few reasons. You could be using the improper needle and thread for your fabric which will cause issues. An alternative issue you could be facing could be that you have the presser foot down, you should always use the machine with the presser foot up to avoid issues. If your issues have to do with puckering fabric, then your thread tension is too tight and needs to be loosened.

How Many Feet do you get?

With the Singer 4411 you get four different presser feet which offers you more options when it comes the type of sewing that you would like to do.The presser feet you get with the Singer 4411 are:

  • All-purpose foot
  • Button foot
  • Buttonhole foot
  • Zipper foot

Each foot that comes with the Singer 4411 is pretty self explanatory. You can use the all-purpose foot for just about any of your sewing needs while the buttonhole foot is especially handy for garments and projects that require functioning buttonholes. The zipper foot will come in handy for any and all zipper-centric needs, such as costumes and bags.

Is The Singer 4411 Easy to Use?

This machine is pretty easy to use for a more advanced sewer. It comes with some pretty great features, such as the drop feed, which is especially handy for quilters or those that sew a lot of buttonholes. This machine really seems to be made for functionality. All of the features are clear and easy to use for those that know what they are doing. While there are quite a few customization features, it is not the machine for someone that’s all about personalizing their crafts. If there is any room for improving this sewing machine it would be in the form of customization features and newbie friendliness.

Pros & Cons Of the Singer 4411

  • Low price
  • Fast Speed
  • Reliable Quality Of Sewing
  • Very Quiet Machine
  •  Snap On Presser Feet
  • No automatic needle threader
  •  It’s a pretty basic machine
  • Not so great needles included

My Overall Thoughts of The Singer 4411 Sewing Machine

Overall the Singer 4411 does exactly what it was intended to do. It’s a great heavy duty sewing machine at a low cost. It is great for anyone that needs speed and sews more for functionality that personality. While there are some really great features, such as the drop feed for quilting and buttonholes, it could have a few more. It is a surprisingly fast machine, going at 1,100 stitches per minute, but the speed is something of a learning curve for most. The quality of sewing that you get with the Singer 4411 is consistent with that of the Singer name and won’t disappoint.

This machine seems to have been made with more advanced sewers in mind and isn’t one I would recommend for someone that is just starting out in the sewing world. The machine does have a few downsides such as the fact that there is no automatic needle threader and it doesn’t come with the greatest of needles. That being said, it’s a pretty good basic machine for a heavy duty sewer.
