Singer Sewing Machines Logo

Singer Sewing Machines: A Background

The Singer company was founded in 1851 and since it was founded it has been synonymous with sewing. The year it was founded is the same year that it’s founder, Isaac Singer, got a patent for the first practical sewing machine.

This was what marked the beginning of the company and the company has continued to make many more firsts in the sewing industry.

This creative and innovative company has celebrated in being the first to have a zig-zag machine, the first electronic sewing machine, and the first ever sewing assistant app for mobile devices, and that’s not even all of the firsts that this company has seen.

They are involved in everything in the industry, from helping fashionistas, to those in home decor, along with embroidery lovers and quilting enthusiasts.

My Favourite Features of The Singer Quantum Stylist 9960

  • Automatic Thread Tension: The machine has automatic thread tension that is easily adjustable and can be reset to default settings with the push of a button. This is great when you want to reset the machine or need to do a quick readjustment for your project.
  • Built-in Carry Handle: The machine has a built-in carry handle for easy transportation and movement. It’s great for when you need to move the machine out of the way or when you need to take it with you on a trip or to a sewing meet/event.
  • Top Drop-in Bobbin System: There is an easy to load top drop-in bobbin system in this machine that makes inserting bobbins a breeze. The bobbin loads from the top and the clear cover make monitoring your supply of thread on the bobbin easy and simple. It also makes checking your thread supply easy.
  • Extension Table: The Singer 9960 sewing machine also comes with an extension table that comes in handy. The extension table can provide you with a larger work space for your bigger projects such as quilts and blankets. It makes working on bigger crafts and projects a lot less stressful.
  • Built-in Buttonhole Styles: This model comes with 13 built-in buttonhole styles that are perfectly sized. The buttonhole styles are one-step and provide reliable and consistent results. Simple place your button in the buttonhole foot and the machine will perfectly sew a buttonhole that is the exact size needed for your button. This is especially great for anyone that enjoys making clothes, such as baby clothes with their tiny buttons, or costumes that require them.

Ease of Use

Sewing with the Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 is a breeze. When you use the automatic controls, push-button operations for things such as your thread cutting, and speed controls, sewing couldn’t get much easier.

Singer knew what they were doing when they put this machine together.

At the heart of their design was the end user, all of the buttons and functions are placed in an easily accessible place when sewing and the machine even has a large LCD screen. A pretty large one considering the price for this machine.

The Presser Foot

This machine comes with snap on presser feet. Generally when you get a sewing machine you will also get a few basic feet that will cover some of your needs. However the Singer 9960 comes with a large range.

You get a good range of the most popular presser feet along with a few extra tools that are especially helpful when attaching trim. The range of popular presser feet are:

  • Zipper Foot
  • Button Sewing Foot
  • Satin Stitch Foot
  • Buttonhole Foot with an Underplate.
  • Open Toe Foot
  • Blind Hem Foot
  • Overcasting Foot
  • Narrow Hem Foot
  • Cording Foot
  • ¼ Inch Foot
  • Darning and Embroidery Foot
  • All purpose Foot

The additional extra tools and feet:

  • Clearance Plate
  • Fancy Trim Foot
  • Clear Stitch-in-the-ditch Foot
  • Braiding Foot
  • Braiding Guide
  • Single Welt Cording Foot.
  • Adjustable Bias Binder Foot

Each of these feet has a function in which it can and will simplify so it is best to use the proper function for your sewing needs.

The all purpose foot can cover most any project with relative ease and is a very versatile foot. The zipper foot, as you could imagine from the name, works great when you are dealing with a zipper-centric project.

The button sewing foot and the buttonhole foot are especially great when you are in need of button work and need both functional buttons and buttonholes.

The Foot Pedal

The Quantum Stylist 9960 comes with a removable foot pedal that can easily control your speed.

When your foot pedal is not attached you can easily use the Start/Stop button to start and stop the sewing process.

After completely removing the foot pedal you can use the Start/Stop button along with the speed control lever to handle your needles speed.

When the foot pedal is attached you can use the lever to cap your maximum speed, but you will still need to use your foot to control the starting and stopping.

Ease of Setup

Setting up the Singer 9960 is quick and easy.

It comes with easy to follow, clear instructions for you to follow.

So long as you have a clear workspace that is size appropriate and an outlet nearby then you should be able to set up your 9960 sewing machine in a matter of minutes.

Machine Noise

The machine is fairly quiet but like most it does make some noise.

Sewing can be done when others are asleep so long as you are in a seperate part of the house or have thicker walls.

While you can also watch television during your sewing it is important to remember that like most machines it does make a little bit of noise and may drown out quieter shows.

When using the wrong thread type the machine may make a high pitched whining sound.

The Singer 9960 Thread Tension

This machine uses horizontal threading to provide a smoother thread flow, meaning that your top spool will lay horizontally when it is attached to the spool stand.

Now some of the spools of thread cause an issue with this machine as they have a slit in the cap where the manufacturer hooks the starting thread. Those slits can snag the horizontal thread during the sewing process and rip it. This can cause you to have to rethread, one fix for this is to just cover the slit with a piece of tape.

There is also an upper thread sensor on this machine that notices when the thread breaks or you are out of thread.

When it notices this the machine will automatically stop, preventing you from continuing the sewing process and having to backtrack.

Durability of the Singer 9960

Like most sewing machines this one can take everyday bumps and knocks but it is not a heavy duty machine.

While you can move it around some, and it is fairly lightweight, do keep in mind that it was not made with transportation as a top design feature.

The machine has a heavy duty metal frame that does provide some support and a bit more resilience to hits than other machines.

The Singer Sewing Machine Warranty

The warranty on this machine is a limited 25 year warranty like many others. The 25 year limited warranty covers the sewing machine head.

There is a 5 year limited warranty that covers motors, light assembly, wiring, speed control, switches, and electrical components of the machine.

There is a 1 year warranty that covers attachments, bulbs, rings, belts, and adjustments. For more information please take a closer look at the Warranty.

Pros & Cons Of the Singer 9960

Pros

Cons

  • Convenient Thread Cutter

  • Great Lighting
  • Extension Table
  • Speed Control
  • Bundle Of Presser Feet
  • The presser foot is not adjustable
  • Bobbins are loose

My Overall Thoughts of The Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 Sewing Machine

The Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 is a great sewing machine for most uses. It comes with a pretty good variety of feet which covers a very wide range of different sewing needs and seems to be of good quality.

One downside for those that like a bit more control, the presser foot, while is removable, is not adjustable. There is an LCD screen to for easy selection of stitches and a pretty great selection of stitches. It comes with a huge range of presser feet and is incredibly easy to set up.

This machine can be used by a sewer of any level. No matter if you are a beginner or an expert at sewing it shouldn’t take you long to get the hang of this machine. You’re getting a pretty great machine with quite a few features at a great cost. The extension table helps greatly for large projects and the lighting is pretty great.

Singer Sewing Machine Review: The Singer 4411 [January 2019]

When you’re searching for the perfect sewing machine to suit your needs,  you can run into a few problems... the biggest one being finding all of the information you need to make an informed decision.

In this review of the Singer 4411 Sewing Machine I am going to give you all the information I can to help you decide if the Singer 4411 is the right machine for you.

Throughout this review, I will dive deep into the Singer 4411. I will explain the great features of this machine and even let you know about the things that I don't like about it.

This heavy duty sewing machine has a wide variety of features. Including instructional videos to help anyone understand how to use it to its full potential, to the adjustable stitch length & width.

For those who are completely new to sewing, below I have also added little background on the Singer sewing machine company.

Singer Sewing Machine Logo

Singer Sewing Machines: A Background

The Singer company was started in 1850 when Isaac Singer invented the world's first practical sewing machine. It wasn’t until 1851, when he got a patent for that sewing machine, that the name Singer became so synonymous with sewing. Since then the company has been tightly intertwined in the industry.

The company's innovative spirit seems to go hand in hand with firsts. Throughout Singers growth they have seen lots of firsts in the sewing machine world.

This includes the world's first electronic sewing machines and the world's first zig-zag machine. For those with more of a technical background they were also the world's first sewing assistant app for mobile devices. Just to name a few.

Singer seems to be not only a practical company but a creative and innovative one that strives to be a leader in the sewing industry world wide. They are a truly respected brand that is passionate about inspiring sewers of all levels everywhere.

Since their beginning the Singer brand has become a household name that is determined to help sewers express themselves creatively through their craft and have managed to so amazingly.

Their machines can cover everything from quilting and sewing to embroidery and much more.

Singer Sewing Machine Review

The Singer 4411 Review

The Singer 4411 Sewing Machine

The Singer 4411 is a machine that was designed with durability in mind. It has a sturdy metal frame that allows it to handle quite a few different project types.

One awesome feature that this machine has is an extra high sewing speed, it can stitch 1,100 stitches per minute. What other features does it have? You will have to read on to find out!

Specifications

  • Dimensions: 15.5 x 6.2 x 12 inches
  • Weight: 14.5 pounds
  • Needle Positions: 3
  • Machine Type: Heavy Duty Mechanical Machine
  • Stitch width/Stitch Length: 6mm/Adjustable
  • Presser Foot Lifter and Pressure Control: Yes
  • Automatic Reverse Stitches: Yes
  • Automatic Needle Threader: Yes
  • Light Included: Yes
  • Buttonhole Type: Four Step Automatic Buttonholes
  • Built in stitches: 11
  • Warranty: 25 years

My Favourite Features of The Singer 4411

  • Instructional Video: The Singer 4411 comes with an instructional video to help anyone and everyone figure out how to properly use the machine to it’s abilities. The video will go through the basics of how to use the machine such as how you can select your desired stitching, how you can create functional buttonholes, and changing your needle. After watching the video you will know everything about the machine.
  • Singer Sewing Assistant App: With the machine you can also download the Singer Sewing Assistant app to a mobile device and it will allow you to learn even more about your machine. The app will teach you about the parts of you machine along with how to easily set it up and use it. The app will provide you with any information that you will need to know about your sewing machine.
  • Built in Stitches: This model comes with 11 different built in stitches to choose from for your sewing needs. Not only will you have your basic selection for nondescript projects but you will have decorative sewing stitches as well for all of your more personalized and custom projects.
  • Four Step Buttonholes: This machine allows you to create four step buttonholes that are perfect and functional everytime. The four steps are clear and easy to follow, they’re shown on the stitch selector dial for easy convenience.  The four step buttonholes are simple to make and the display walking you through every step eliminates the possibility of mixing up your steps.
  • Top Drop in Bobbin: The top drop in bobbin is not only easy to thread but also easy to see. It is transparent to insure that you can monitor your thread supply and see when you are running low. This also allows you to check how much thread you have before you start a project so that you don’t run out of it in the middle of a seam. I’ve found that it is best to check both before and after you start a sewing session, that way you know exactly how much you have and how much more sewing you will be able to complete before re-threading your bobbin.
  • Drop Feed: This one is especially great for quilters. The feed teeth can be lowered to enable you to sew buttons or for free motion sewing if you wish. All you have to do is slide the Drop Feed lever that lowers the teeth and you’re good to go. Simple slide the lever back and turn it one complete turn to raise the feed teeth back up again.

The Presser Foot

The presser foot it is easily adjustable. You can set it as high as it will go to make your projects move along more quickly or lower it all the way down to enable you provide the maximum amount of pressure on your projects. For thicker or heavier projects using the setting that is about ½” would benefit you and your project.

However, you should keep in mind that you shouldn't attempt to sew through anything too thick. The reason being that should you have the presser foot too high this will cause the top tension to disengage and your thread will jam.

You can also adjust it so that the fabric you are using doesn’t pucker. If you are sewing on fabrics that are very lightweight and you don’t need as much pressure.

This model comes with four feet to fit your sewing needs.

The Pedal Foot

The foot pedal can take some time to get use to.

Getting used to the speed of the machine will require some practice using the foot pedal until you feel comfortable sewing both quickly and slowly.

In order to get used to the machine and the foot pedal, I would recommend starting on a simple projects that doesn’t require quite as much effort on your part.

While the pedal may be a bit sensitive, you can modify it to be less sensitive. The cord for the Singer 4411 is a reasonable length and is heavy duty which is a welcomed feature.

Ease of Setup

The Singer 4411 comes with clear instructions to set it up, it is easy and very simple.

The process of setting up shouldn’t take you too long provided that you have a space set up for it.

While the machine is relatively easy to use and set up, it is more of an experienced sewers machine than that of a newbie sewer.

Machine Durability

The Singer 4411 is a very durable computerized machine sewing machine. The metal frame allows it to handle everyday bumps and knocks without any real damage while also providing the machine with rigid support.

The machine is relatively versatile and can be moved from here to there with relative ease. Moving the machine around with you on the go shouldn’t cause and real wear.

Machine Noise

The Singer 4411 can be a bit loud due to its speed but it is a relatively quiet machine when you consider the power behind it.

Unfortunately I would not recommend sewing at nighttime when the kids are asleep,  unless, of course,  they are very sound sleepers or you are lucky enough to have a sewing area at the other end of the house.

One thing you can do to help minimize the noise is make sure you have a sturdy table to sew on, while it doesn’t make the machine itself quieter it does keep down the noise that is made during the sewing process.

The Thread Tension

With this model you can adjust your thread tension.

Remember that if you are facing issues when it comes to thread tension, there could be few reasons.

You could be using the improper needle and thread for your fabric which will cause issues. An alternative issue you could be facing could be that you have the presser foot down, you should always use the machine with the presser foot up to avoid issues.

If your issues have to do with puckering fabric, then your thread tension is too tight and needs to be loosened.

How Many Feet do you get?

With the Singer 4411 you get four different presser feet which offers you more options when it comes the type of sewing that you would like to do.

The presser feet you get with the Singer 4411 are:

  • All-purpose foot
  • Button foot
  • Buttonhole foot
  • Zipper foot

Each foot that comes with the Singer 4411 is pretty self explanatory.

You can use the all-purpose foot for just about any of your sewing needs while the buttonhole foot is especially handy for garments and projects that require functioning buttonholes.

The zipper foot will come in handy for any and all zipper-centric needs, such as costumes and bags.

Is The Singer 4411 Easy to Use?

This machine is pretty easy to use for a more advanced sewer.

It comes with some pretty great features, such as the drop feed, which is especially handy for quilters or those that sew a lot of buttonholes.

This machine really seems to be made for functionality. All of the features are clear and easy to use for those that know what they are doing.

While there are quite a few customization features, it is not the machine for someone that’s all about personalizing their crafts.

If there is any room for improving this sewing machine it would be in the form of customization features and newbie friendliness.

The Singer Sewing Machine Warranty

The warranty included for the Singer 4411 is covered over the span of 25 years. The sewing machine head itself is covered for a limited 25 years.

The warranty that covers the motor, speed control and electronic components of the machine along with wiring, stitches and light assembly covers a limited 2 year span.

There is only a limited 90 day warranty for attachments, belts, rings, bulbs, and adjustments.

For more information of the warranty and what it covers please look at the full warranty here: Singer 4411 Warranty.

From the Manufacturer

Pros & Cons Of the Singer 4411

Pros

Cons

  • Low price
  • Fast Speed
  • Reliable Quality Of Sewing
  • Very Quiet Machine
  •  Snap On Presser Feet
  • No automatic needle threader
  •  It’s a pretty basic machine
  • Not so great needles included

My Overall Thoughts of The Singer 4411 Sewing Machine

Overall the Singer 4411 does exactly what it was intended to do.

It’s a great heavy duty sewing machine at a low cost. It is great for anyone that needs speed and sews more for functionality that personality.

While there are some really great features, such as the drop feed for quilting and buttonholes, it could have a few more.

It is a surprisingly fast machine, going at 1,100 stitches per minute, but the speed is something of a learning curve for most.

The quality of sewing that you get with the Singer 4411 is consistent with that of the Singer name and won’t disappoint.

The Singer 4411 Sewing Machine Review

This machine seems to have been made with more advanced sewers in mind and isn’t one I would recommend for someone that is just starting out in the sewing world. The machine does have a few downsides such as the fact that there is no automatic needle threader and it doesn’t come with the greatest of needles. That being said, it’s a pretty good basic machine for a heavy duty sewer.

Brother Sewing Machine Review: The Brother SE425 [January 2019]

When you’re searching for the perfect sewing machine to suit your needs,  you can run into a few problems... the biggest one being finding all of the information you need to make an informed decision.

In this review of the Brother SE425 Sewing Machine I am going to give you all the information I can to help you decide if the Brother SE425 is the right machine for you.

I will cover the general specs of the sewing machine, the features, a few things that I really liked about the machine, and even a couple of things that I did not like so much.

For those who are completely new to sewing, below I have added little background on Brother as a company.

Throughout this review, I will go over all of the specifications and functions that the machine offers you, along with any downsides that may come with it.

Brother Sewing Machines: A Background

Yasui Sewing Machine Co. was established back in 1908 by Kanekichi Yasui. Kanekichi was the father of the founders of Brother Industries, Ltd.

At a young age the eldest child, Masayoshi Yasui, began helping his father by working as an apprentice in Osaka.

With the way the sewing machine market was back then, Masayoshi was determined that he would turn the import based sewing machine industry into an export based industry simply by introducing domestic production.

While many had their doubts his determination remained strong as he began developing and selling hydraulic presses to produce straw hats. While doing that he also pursued research regarding the manufacturing of sewing machines.

His research finally paid off when his younger brother and co-founder of Brother, Jitsuichi Yasui, successfully developed shuttle hooks, one of the main components that make up sewing machines.

It was in 1932 that the brothers were able to introduce their sewing machine, the first to be made completely in Japan.

The motto of Brother has been what has driven them since very early on. Their motto “superior quality and diligent service” is a key to their company’s continued success and shows their dedication and commitment to producing products with real value, and it is something that gets passed down to every employee of Brother.

The Brother company started in 1908 is a company that is truly dedicated to their mission of creating and delivering superior value to their customers through high quality and service in a speedy manner.

Is The Brother SE425 Easy to Use?

The machine is not just easy to set up but also easy to use. Once you set it up you can do everything else with relative else.

This includes everything from changing the thread to switching functions. You’re even able to sew without the foot pedal.

Due to this being a computerized sewing machine, a basic understanding of technology is needed but even for a complete novice it is pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

Even if you are a beginner you can easily use this machine, the built-in tutorials help make learning a breeze and watching other tutorials and videos online will also help.

The Foot Pedal

While the foot pedal can be sensitive it is important to remember that you can change that to suit your particular preference. You also need to keep in mind that it may take some getting used to if you haven’t used a similar machine before.

The Presser Foot

The presser foot on the Brother SE425 is not adjustable, that being said it is easy to use.

With this machine you get 7 presser foot options, which easily covers all of your various basic sewing needs. The included feet are buttonholes, overcasting, monogramming, zipper, blind stitch, zigzag, and embroidery.

Each foot has an intended purpose, using the foot for its intended purpose will help to eliminate stresses involved in sewing and simplify the sewing process.

The Thread Tension

It is important to remember that like with most sewing thread tension can be an issue. Remember that if your cloth is puckering all you need to do to eliminate your problem is loosen the thread tension.

For more on how to adjust your thread tension see the below video.

The Sewing Machines Noise

This particular machine isn’t too noisy but it is recommended to use it when the household is awake or simply use the machine away from the rooms of sleeping children (if you are not in the room next door you should have no problems).

You can use this machine while watching the television without drowning out the show, but please remember that the machine, like most, does make some noise and may interrupt quieter shows.

Sewing Machine Durability

The Brother SE425 sewing machine is a durable machine but please keep in mind that it is not a heavy duty sewing machine.

I’s main features are for sewers that like customization and personalization. With that being said it can handle everyday bumps and knocks without taking any real damage.

This is reassuring when transporting or storing the machine in high cupboards or shelving

Ease of Set Up

The setup process for this machine is pretty easy and it does come with easy to follow instructions.

So long as you have a little bit of time and an appropriately sized space for the machine which is close to an outlet you should be good to go!

The Brother Sewing Machine Warranty

The warranty period for this machine lasts 25 years from the purchase date and covers the machine. The warranty is 1 year for it’s included accessories.

The warranty does not cover physical damage or any damage caused by other devices or software. To see more information about what is and isn’t covered please look at the Warranty.

How Many Feet Do You Get?

With the Brother SE425 you get 7 feet. The included feet are:

  • Buttonhole Foot
  • Overcasting Foot
  • Monogramming Foot
  • Zipper Foot
  • Blindstitch Foot
  • Zigzag Foot
  • Embroidery Foot

Each foot has a purpose when it comes to sewing and will make certain sewing jobs easier. The buttonhole foot, as one might imagine, comes in handy especially for the creation of buttonholes.

Likewise, the zipper foot would be used when a project requires zipper work, monogramming for monogramming needs, embroidery foot for embroidery work, and so on.

Pros & Cons Of the Brother SE425

Pros

Cons

  • LCD Screen
  • 170 Embroidery Patterns
  • 67 Sewing Stitches
  • Affordable
  • Not a heavy duty machine

My Overall Thoughts of The Brother SE425 Sewing Machine

The Brother SE425 sewing machine is a great machine, especially for those that like to make crafts and projects with customization and personality.

The machine comes with a large variety of embroidery patterns and stitches, not to mention many more than you can easily download.

This particular machine is great value considering all of the features you get for the price you pay.

The LCD touchscreen is one of the more obvious advance computer elements of the machine, you can not only make your stitch selections there bit also watch tutorials and follow step by step instructions with ease.

While many sewing machines, especially the computerized ones, seem made for one specific sewer type in mind, the Brother SE425 seems to be one that you can use regardless of your status: beginners, intermediate, and advanced sewers are all equally able to use this machine to the best of its abilities.

Brother Sewing Machines Logo

Brother Sewing Machines: A Background

Brother International Corporations exists as a US branch of the Japanese based Brother Industries Ltd.

They have existed since 1954 and since being founded have strived to serve the needs of both homes and offices.

During their time serving the sewing community, they have been awarded ‘Consumer Digest Best Buy’ in 2013 and strive to remain a good company.

Brother offers great warranties and has a minimum 25-year warranty for its products which seem to prove how committed they are to their customers.

One unique thing about Brother is that they actually run a blog. The blog is called ‘Stitching Sewcial’ and covers DIY projects and personal stories. They also tend to share tips on all things sewing with anyone that happens to read their blog.

Brother Sewing Machine Review

The Brother SE400 Review

I’ve found that the Brother SE400 is an affordable sewing machine for those who like customizing their crafts but need to remain within a budget.

It offers quite a few features, including an automatic threader which cuts down on time and simplifies the threading process and an automatic thread cutter which is great when you’re piecing something that you plan to cut down in size.

Specifications

  • Automatic Needle Threader: Yes
  • Automatic Thread Cutter: Yes
  • Built-in Stitches: 67
  • Built-in Designs: 70
  • Feed Dogs: 7 point feed dogs
  • Weight: 10.9 pounds
  • Dimensions: 30.3 x 15 x 15.2

My Favourite Features of The Brother SE400

  • Automatic Needle Threader: This machine comes enabled with an automatic needle threader to help eliminate some of the hassles involved in sewing. Threading becomes easy and simple. This feature comes in handy pretty often, no matter the project no one wants to sit and struggle to thread their needle to work on their crafts, the automatic needle threader handles that for you so that you can work on your projects.
  • Built-in tutorials: The Brother SE400 Sewing Machine comes with built-in tutorials on how to use it for both your embroidery functions and sewing. The tutorials can be found on the machines LCD touchscreen display. These can be especially helpful for anyone that isn’t sure how to use the machine for their needs or simply for a refresher course before you start a project.
  • Built-in Customization: This model comes with plenty of customization features. There are 67 different stitches that include decorative stitches, quilting stitches, heirloom stitches, and utility stitches. When it comes to customizing your projects and crafts the number of personal touches you want to add are up to, this machine lets you decide how much or how little you’d like to use. • Design Editing Features: With this machine, you will also be able to do things such as rotating, mirror images, and increasing or decreasing your designs size. This allows you to add your own customization on just about anything that you decide to create. You can flip your designs to asymmetric designs with perfect precision or use the same design on different sized fabrics for matching shirts or even a cute matching outfit for your dog.

IBroidery.Com Integration

One of the best features of this machine is used when embroidering.

Usually, if you want to do embroidery work you have to do some research to find the right pattern and then you have to go out and buy it, it’s a little tedious and time-consuming.

After that, you still have to do all of the embroidery work by hand. The Brother SE400 sewing machine changes all of that.

This computerized sewing machine, like some others, is capable of much more than an average sewing machine.

It has built-in embroidery patterns for you to choose from and use. It enables you to not only choose a pattern but also complete your embroidery very quickly compared to the traditional way.

The built-in patterns aren’t your only choices though.

You can go to iBroidery.com and buy thousands more designs and patterns. These can all easily be download to the Brother SE400 sewing machine after you purchase them.

The designs are affordable and adorable, not to mention that are exclusively for customers of Brother. Each design is bought on a pay-per-design basis.

The selection of designs on the website is pretty extensive. You can find a design for anything from your Disney princess themed party to limited-edition designs that are spectacular. Choosing what design you want to go with may end up being your most time-consuming task.

Remember that while this machine is an advanced one for pros, it is a pretty great option for beginners of embroidery. After you set it up, which shouldn’t take more than a few minutes, you can start your crafts.

Is The Brother SE400 Easy to Use?

The Brother SE400 is an easy machine to use, this goes for anyone from beginner to an expert.

After you drop in your design and thread your needle you’re good to go. Once you are finished you can easily move on to your next project.

Having an automatic needle threader makes it easy to start any projects and the automatic thread cutter makes it easy to perfect your craft.

Add the variety of different stitches and embroidery options, which are great for personal projects, and you can handle all of your different sewing projects with ease.

It’s relatively lightweight, making it easy to carry from one place to another for workshops or sewing groups.

Pros & Cons Of the Brother SE400

Pros

Cons

  • Large stitch library
  • Easy automatic threading
  • Computer connectivity for importing designs
  • LCD screen display
  • Large embroidery area
  • Low-resolution LCD screen
  • Not A Lot of Error Feedback

My Overall Thoughts of The Brother SE400 Sewing Machine

You get a large library that consists of 67 different stitches and 70 built-in embroidery designs. The LCD screen allows you to easily choose your options and go. That being said the screen isn’t the greatest resolution.

Overall it is a lightweight and portable machine. It has enough features and abilities to make well worth the price.

Its weight allows you to carry it to from one room to another or store it away in a high cupboard without feeling like you’ve had a work out.

The Brother SE400 sewing machine seems to be a good option for anyone, beginner or expert. It’s great for your home projects or for a workshop. Price wise it is a great value for the number of features and customization that you get. The machine is just upwards of $300.

Brother Sewing Machine Review: The Brother CS6000i [January 2019]

Searching for the perfect sewing machine is no easy feat. Especially if you are new to the sewing world.

In this sewing machine review, I break down the Brother CS6000i in hope to make it easier for you to figure out if this is the right machine for you.

In this review, I am going to cover the general specifications of the Brother CS6000i, the top features, what I liked about it and even something I didn't like so much.

For those who are completely new to the sewing world, I have even broken down Brother as a brand to help you choose if Brother is the right sewing machine brand for you.

Brother Sewing Machine Logo

Brother Sewing Machines: A Background

Brother International Corporations is a US branch of the Japanese based Brother Industries Ltd.

They have been in business since 1954 and work to serve the needs of homes and offices.

Back in 2013, they were awarded “Consumer Digest Best Buy” for their sewing and embroidery machines.

According to Amazon, the Brother CS6000i is actually one of their best sellers when it comes to computerized sewing machines. Their standard minimum warranty for Brother sewing machines is 25 years and stands as a testament to their dedication to those that use their machines.

The company runs it’s own sewing blog called ‘Stitching Sewcial’ where they share tips with their readers along with DIY projects, and personal stories with anyone who is thinking about purchasing one of their products.

The Brother company truly cares about their customers and wants to relate to them and help them with their sewing needs.

The Brother CS6000i Review

The Brother CS6000i Sewing Machine

With its assortment of stitch patterns and one-step buttonholes, you’re able to customize your crafts without having to hand stitch your favorite styles on to them. The CS6000i offers 60 different patterns to choose from.

The machine will take your favorite stitches and styles and add them to your project when you choose your settings on the LCD control panel. The LCD control panel allows you to both find and choose your design right there on the machine.

Specifications

  • Weight: 13 pounds
  • Dimensions: 16 x 6.7 x 11.4 inches
  • One-Step Buttonholes: 7
  • Jam-Resistant: Yes
  • Automatic Needle Threader: Yes
  • Start/Stop Button: Yes
  • Made For: Advanced/pro user
  • Stitches Per Minute: 850
  • Stitch Patterns: 60
  • Hardcover Included: Yes
  • Wide Table: Yes
  • LCD Control Panel: Yes

My Favourite Features of The Brother CS6000i

  • Built-in Free Arm: With the Brother CS6000i Sewing Machine you have a built-in frame arm that allows your more intricate projects and crafts to be simpler and less stressful. The built-in free arm helps you make cuffs, hems, and sleeves with relative ease.  The free arm makes your machine more easily portable than machines without a free arm and makes creating sleeves and hems simply by allowing you to slip the fabric over it during the sewing process.
  • Wide Table: This model comes with a wide table that makes large projects and crafts, such as quilts, easier to manage. The table is not only large enough to handle your larger projects but sturdy enough to stand up to your heavier crafts. It’s great for projects such as costumes or thick curtains that may have heavier fabrics that you need to lay out and inspect as you work.
  • Automatic Threader: With the Brother CS6000i Sewing Machine there is an automatic threader that will ensure that your needle is threaded perfectly every time. One thing to note however is that the needles that come with this machine aren’t likely to handle leather well, so if you need to work with leather you may have got a more durable needle. This is perfect for when you don’t have time to sit and struggle with threading before you work on a quick project.
  • Speed Control: With this sewing machine you are able to easily control your speed and choose between three different speed settings. This particular feature may come in handy when your project requires straight seams and a slower pace for adding buttonholes or decorative touches. Having various speeds allows you to create your project as a pace that enables you to add the details and intricacies that you want without rushing through them or quickly make small and simple projects.
  • Customization: The Brother CS6000i is also enabled with 60 different built-in sewing stitches and 7 different styles of one-step buttonholes to allow you to add more customization to your crafts. You get 20 different decorative stitches, 20 regular stitches, 6 heirloom stitches, 7 quilting stitches, and 7 automatic buttonhole styles.

The Brother CS6000i Makes Sewing Machine Setup Easy

With the amount of computerized technology that has been put inside of this model, setup is extremely easy.

If you start at the beginning with the threading capabilities you’ll notice that there is a diagram with numbers that tell you exactly what where you need to thread in each spot, making sure that even a beginner can thread the machine with no trouble.

Once you’ve successfully threaded the machine you’ll move on to see the automatic needle threading system. This system allows you to hit a simple lever located on the side of the machine and let the machine take off.

You won’t need to sit there struggling to thread the needle through the eye and poking your fingers for 15 minutes. Once you press the lever the threading is automatically done.

You will also get a diagram with this machine that shows you exactly how to use the automatic bobbin winding systems.

With the quick-set, top drop-in bobbin, you’ll be able to quickly eliminate the need to fish for your thread, which is something most are happy to eliminate.

Having The Ability to ‘Foot Free Sew’

When you want to do a more intricate or complicated patterns or designs you tend to need a bit more focus than you do with a more simple work. This means concentrating on moving your feet while you watch your sewing come to life can be a bit difficult.

With this machine, you can engage the automatic sewing feature which will make it more simple for you by allowing you to move the fabric through the machine to make your design without having to use your feet at all.

The CS6000i is also equipped with a start and stop button that can quickly stop your needle should you need to re-position or move your chosen pattern and just as easily start your needle back up to finish your project.

Given that you no longer need to worry about moving your feet while sewing you can choose from any number of stitches. The Brother CS6000i sewing machine comes with 60 different stitches which include 7 auto-buttonhole styles.

You can choose even the most difficult of patterns, stitches, and buttonholes all while knowing that they will come out looking perfect and beautiful due to the fact that you didn’t have to concentrate on the movement of your feet.

A one-step buttonhole feature is one sure way to ensure that you create functional and successful buttonholes with a minimum of fuss and issues.

It’s important to have functional buttonholes that work well and with this machine, you won’t have to argue with them or find a workaround to make your buttonholes work.

Is The Brother CS6000i Easy to Use?

This Brother machine is a pretty easy one to use if you know what you are doing, it has plenty of features to ensure that.

With its automatic threader, threading your needle is a piece of cake. After your needle is threaded you can press a lever on the side of the machine and it’ll do the work for you.

There is also a feature to all you eliminate the need to fish your thread with a top-drop bobbin. Once you’ve done that you’re good to finish your project or even start a new one.

The Brother Sewing Machine Warranty

The Brother CS6000i Sewing Machine has a 25-year warranty from the original buy date for the machine itself and 1 year for the parts and accessory items.

The warranty covers the machine and its accessories. It does not cover physical damage of any kind or damage caused by improper installations. For a complete description of what it does and does not cover you can take a look at their Warranty.

Pros & Cons Of the Brother CS6000i

Pros

  • LCD display for easy selection and use
  • Customizable features such as buttonholes and stitches
  • Portable with a hard carrying case
  • Wide table for big projects
  • Fewer stitches than some makes and models
  • Steep learning curve

Overall Thoughts of The Brother CS6000i Sewing Machine

The Brother CS6000i Sewing Machine has an adequate amount of customizable features built in, but not as many as some other computerized sewing machines on the market.

This sewing machine should be used by a pro. It is a great option for anyone that is into quilting or making big projects. It is also a great option for those that want a variety of features but are wanting to stick to a lower budget.

The LED screen helps to minimize strain on the eyes by making the stitch selection easier. The case makes it easily portable and being lightweight it’s great for anyone that likes to go to classes or sewing groups.

This model is under $200 making it a budget-friendly machine, not to mention it gives you a great deal when you take into account how many features it has to allow for personality on each of your creations.

Key Things to Consider When Buying an Embroidery Sewing Machine

Deciding on investing in an embroidery sewing machine that will make your next creative project easier?

These are the key factors you need to consider before you make your purchase of a monogram machine:

  • User Friendliness: Whether your machine will be used frequently or occasionally, ease of use is an important factor to consider before you buy your first or your next embroidery machine. No matter how tech-savvy you are, a machine with a complex set of operations will only frustrate you and make you more reluctant to pursue your next creative project. Choose a machine which is user-friendly for both beginners and advanced users. The simpler, the better.
  • Extra Features: It is important to consider the extra features of an embroidery machine before you make the purchase. Almost all monogramming machines have built-in embroidery designs which include lettering and monogramming fonts. Try to look for machines with such features to save time and effort on your next creative project.
  • Price: Buying an embroidery machine is an investment but it doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. Depending on your personal preferences and the features you are looking for in your machine, you should find a machine that is pocket-friendly without compromising quality and features.

What Type of Monogramming Machine Suits Your Needs?

Depending on whether you already own a sewing machine or not, you have several options to consider before you make your purchase.

Is the machine you own a monogram-only machine?

Are you looking for a machine that only embroiders?

If your answer is yes, then you only have to purchase a new machine with the features you are looking for.

If you already have a sewing machine and you are looking to buy a new one, then you might want to purchase an embroidery machine that can also monogram.

With this type of machine, you can quilt, create, decorate and embellish just any type of fabric or work on any project without having to switch from one machine to another.

Beginners or designers on a shoestring budget can purchase a basic monogramming sewing machine which is easy to operate and has all the key features.

What is The Standard Price of Monogramming Machines?

The more advanced the features on your machines are, the more likely it is to be expensive. You can pay anything from $250 to $5000 for a domestic or commercial machine.

It’s advised that you compare prices and features before you finally make a purchase.

Cons

  • Small monogram size: The machine comes with stitches to do basic monogramming but the size of the monograms you can create is fairly small.
  • No computer linkages: The CX155LA machine doesn’t come with a USB port so you cannot download anything to it. Everything is pre-programmed.
  • A limited number of fonts: The built-in font is a standard print type font. Its size can’t be changed, and the letters always print approximately ½ inch high. Users who want to do a lot with letters may find this a bit frustrating.
  • Difficulty in regulating tension: the machine does not come with auto tension control which makes it very hard to regulate tension.
  • Difficult finding a carrying case: Your brand new CX155LA machine will not come with a carrying case and finding one that fits its size perfectly can be a bit challenging.

The Brother CX155LA computerized sewing and quilting machine is a highly-recommended machine which all intermediate seamstresses and quilters would love.

Features like the easy stitch selection, variable speed control, bright work area, and the easy needle thread system are some of the functions which make the machine well worth the purchase.

Should I buy a Used Embroidery Machine or a New One?

If factors like warranty, start-up supply, and accessories are important to you, then you might want to consider purchasing a brand-new machine. If not, a used but functional machine will be ideal for you, especially if you are also on a tight budget.

Embroidery-only machine or a combination model?

Modern combination model machines offer a variety of embroidery functions and can do a lot of basic embroidery works. If you are a complete beginner, consider buying this type of machine. It will cost you less and you will familiarize yourself with both functions.

What Size Monogramming Area/Hoop Suits Your Needs?

Before you purchase the machine you are so tempted to buy, take a close look at the monogramming area. A small workspace will not favor big projects, a bigger hoop on the other hand, will be appropriate for big designs. Depending on the size of the projects you will be working on, choose a machine with a small or big area.

How Does a Monogramming Machine Work?

Depending on their features, monogramming machines may work differently but the basic functions are the same. As a designer, you must first create your design and then, with the hoop you choose where you want your design to sit.

Why is There a Warning Against Monogramming?

The National Criminal Justice Reference Service warns against putting the name of your child on clothing and other personal items. This is because it makes the work of abductors easy. It’s therefore advised to personalize children’s clothes safely.

Applications of Monograms

Monograms make it easy to create custom designs on any hand-sewn design. They are used for both identification and styling purposes. Individuals like to put monograms on their belongings for identification and security. Businesses prefer using monograms to add a special personalized touch to their wares.

Final Thoughts

I hope that in this post I was able to clear up some questions you had about monogramming, monogramming machines and gave you a good insight to some of my favourite monogramming machines.

I wish you all the best on your sewing adventures!

What Are the Benefits of a Computerized Sewing Machine?

One of the biggest benefits when it comes to using a computerized sewing machine is that you only need to invest a small amount of time to create something phenomenal and professional over and over again.

So long as you’ve got the basics down and you can thread your own machine, you are more than ready to start your sewing adventure.

Yet another upside to using a computerized sewing machine is that it can easily create amazing works and you can create a more consistent end result.

When you’re attempting to do it all with a manual sewing machine, you can have changes in how you feed the material to the foot and different variations in your thread tension

With a computerized sewing machine that offers automatic features, a lot of these issues go away.

Why Use a Computerized Sewing Machine?

When it comes to what sewing machine works best for you it really comes down to what you want to use it for.

When you use a computerized sewing machine it can be extremely useful, but there is more to it than just controlling the thread tension or turning stitching on to autopilot mode.

Now if you happen to love doing embroidery work and want a computerized sewing machine, you’ve got quite a few options that can handle your love for embroidery.

A lot of patterns can be downloaded from the internet and some machines even let you customize your embroidery with your own designs. It enables you to create something that fits your personality and project, and it’s super easy.

Today a lot of the best and most popular sewing machines come with different training materials for beginning sewers who want to learn but haven’t used a machine before, this helps them to start shaping their skills on computerized sewing machines right off the bat.

There are some makes and models that even have a tutorial built-in to the machine’s data so that those wanting to can learn quickly and safely.

With all of these different makes and models with their various functions, it could be hard for you to decide what you should get for your needs.

That is where this review of some of the best computerized sewing machines comes in.

With these computerized sewing machine reviews and thoughts, you can make your decision without so much stress and worrying over if you are getting what you need.

The selection process becomes simpler as you get to look at your options altogether and compare them before you look at them.

Are Computerized Sewing Machines Suitable for Beginners?

Computerized sewing machines can be great for many reasons. One of the best things about them is how easy they are to use.

They can feature quite a few things that a manual sewing machine doesn’t, such as powerful feed doges, auto-stitch tension, auto-needle threading, and auto-reverse.

Something you should always keep in mind when deciding what sewing machine to start someone out on is who you’re deciding it for.

If they are easily overwhelmed or very young then it would probably be in their best interest to start them out on a manual sewing machine.

Below are some options of computerized sewing machines that I’ve looked into. As there are so many different options with their own features and downsides, finding the right one can be a pretty big process. So, here I’ve sorted and broken them down to make it just a little bit simpler.

Can You Get Different Types of Computerized Sewing Machines?

Today just about every sewing machine is in some way computerized.

The computerized aspect is generally found within automatic threading, thread tension, or speed control. They are also some of the things that many sewers seem to struggle with, especially as beginners.

Having automatic computerized features helps to make sewing less stressful and complicated while adding more fun into the mix.

Now if you’re already able to handle sewing and machines and want to step up your game, then you may be ready for some of the other automatic features that computerized sewing machines can provide.

Some of these functions include programmable monogramming, stitch patterns, and embroidery patterns. If it’s something that interests you can also set up some makes and models to create automatically rolled hems, seams, and some other various sewing chores that you need to get done.

If you’re looking to get a model that is top-of-the-line, then chances are, you will get everything automatic. That leaves you to simply select your preferred stitching and pattern, then install your spool or bobbin, control your speed as desired and create!

What Are the Common Problems of a Computerized Sewing Machine?

Now, with a computerized sewing machine, you need to be aware that one of the biggest issues that occurs with them is that they are indeed vulnerable to issues involving software.

Your computerized sewing machine can easily turn into one big paperweight if there is even a single bad file in your firmware update.

There is also a vulnerability which can occur when using a USB flash stick to download or directly copy pattern files to the machine. This is not necessarily a fault of the computerized sewing machine but something to keep in mind.

What Is the Price of a Computerized Sewing Machine?

When it comes to picking out a sewing machine, most people have a budget that they’d like to stick to, so it is important to know what you’re getting for your money.

If you’re just looking for the basics when it comes to computerized sewing machines and only needs a couple of features then you can more than likely find the right one for under $200.

However, if you are looking to get the top-of-the-line with all of the automatic features then you’ll more than likely end up paying thousands for it.

Most sewers that want to get more than one or two features but aren’t looking to spend a tone on them should expect to pay around $500.

You can even go a little higher than that and get more customization for your machine, or if you don’t want to go that high then you should keep in mind that you can still get customization, but you’ll be doing it all by hand rather than by the computerized sewing machine.

Back to School Pencil Case (December 2018)

When I was younger I loved it when my mother would create my very own bookcases, pencil cases, and backpacks for school.

Me and the other kids would compare our mother’s sewing and skills and would love to show off our own custom things our mothers would make us.

Now that it is time for my kids to head off to school I love taking them down to look at all the different fabrics & materials to get them to pick out what they want for their school gear.

This pencil case is a great project for anyone starting off sewing, it is fairly straightforward with only a few basic straight sews. If you are yet to make the big purchase of a sewing machine check out my post  to help you buy the best sewing machine for beginners

I hope your kids enjoy their new pencil cases as much as I enjoyed making them!

What You Need For The Outer Layer:

  • 1 x 7″ zipper
  • 1 x 9.5″ x 10.5″  rectangle in your chosen outer fabric
  • 1 x 9.5″ x 10.5″ rectangle in heavy sew-in interfacing
  • 2 x 4” diameter circles in your chosen outer fabric
  • 2 x 4” diameter circles in heavy sew-in interfacing
  • 2 x 10.5″ x 1.5″ rectangles of piping fabric
  • Approximately 19″ of 1/4″ piping cord, cut in half to create 2 equal pieces

What You Need For The Lining Layer:

  • 1 x 9.5” x 10.5” rectangle of lining fabric
  • 2 x 4” diameter circles in lining fabric

Along With Your Sewing Machine Other Required Items:

  • Coordinating sewing thread
  • Needle (for hand-basting)
  • Regular presser foot
  • Seam ripper
  • Zipper foot
  • Pins

Please Note: 1/2“ seam allowance has been included in all measurements.

Back to School Pencil Case: A Step By Step Guide

Making the Lining Layer of The Pencil case

  1. Start off by folding the lining rectangle (9.5” x 10.5”) in half. Right side to right side so the shorter 9.5” side is the side along your fold. The result should be a new triangle 9.5” x 5.25”.

You now want to create a stout tube. To do this sew (with backstitching) a straight line a 1/2” from the tip of the rectangle and 1” in from each short side. You should be left with a tube with an approximate opening size of 6.75” for the 7” zipper.
  2. Part the unsewn part of the seam opening where the zipper is going to be placed, test the zipper is going to fit before proceeding any further. Make any adjustments as necessary.
  3. At each end of the tube make 1/4″ – 3/8″ cuts/snips along the whole length of the 1/2“ seam allowance. Make sure you DO NOT cut all the way into your stitching line when making these cuts.
  4. Pin one of your 4” circles you cut from your lining fabric to one of the tubes end openings. You want to pin the circle so the inner side of the circle meets the inner side of the tube.
  5. Place your pinned circle outside face down (so the outer side of where the circle end and the tube meet is facing you) and sew all the way around using a 1/2“ seam allowance. Make sure you keep the snipped seam allowance spread out and tightly pulled so you get a smooth sew all the way around. Don’t worry if your stitching is not a perfect circle, this will not matter on the end product. Trim the seam allowance to 1/4″ to reduce the overall bulk of the pencil case.

Repeat exactly the same for the other end of the tube.
  6. Once both sides are complete, congratulations you have finished the lining of your pencil case! Set aside.

Making The Outer Layer of The Pencil Case

  1. Pair up your pieces of interfacing with the corresponding pieces of outer fabric. You want to sew them together by sewing the interfacing pieces onto the wrong side of the outer fabric. You want to sew fairly close to the edge (about 1/4″ or less if you can). This is so the stitching line is hidden within the seam allowances when the whole pencil case has been assembled together
  2. Repeat step number 1 from the above section with the outer fabric rectangle to create a second stout tube with an opening for the zipper.

Making The Piping of The Pencil Case

  1. Attach the zipper foot to your sewing machine and move the needle to the outer most position available on your machine.
  2. Fold one piece of the piping fabric over one piece of the piping cord. Line up the long edges of the fabric up together.
  3. Using the longest stitch length possible on your machine (you will be unpicking this down on ‘attaching the piping’ step 4), hug the piping cord tightly with the edge of your presser foot and sew as close to the piping as possible to enclose the piping cord with fabric. Sew right to the end of the fabric.

Attaching The Piping to The Pencil case

  1. Get your outer layer tube and line up the seam allowance of one open end with the seam allowance of the piping and pin in place. (this is now the head end)
  2. Adjust the stitch length of your machine back to regular and start sewing the piping from 1” in from the end. Sew as close as you can to the piping cord to attach it securely to the circumference of the open end of your tube.
  3. When you reach 1.5” from the end of the piping (the new tail end) stop sewing with the needle down.
  4. Get your seam ripper and unpick the long stitches in the remaining 1.5” of piping to expose the naked cord. (the long stitches you created back up in ‘making the piping’ step 3)
  5. Trim the naked cord back enough so the cord only just meets the head end of the piping and does not overlap. Do not trim any piping fabric at this point! It will be overlapping but needs to stay like this.
  6. Fold back the piping fabric by about 1/2″. Release the head end of the piping and tuck it snugly into the tail end. You should aim to have the ends of the cord meeting and not overlapping.
  7. Fold the fabric of the tail end back over the head end. Keep sewing to finish attaching the piping to the open end of your tube.

Finishing The Outer Layer of The Pencil Case

  1. Cut the seam allowance of the end again just like you did back up in step 3 of the ‘making the lining layer’.
  2. Pin one of your outer circles to the open end of your tube with the right sides facing together and sew as you did in step 5 of the ‘making the lining layer’.Using the zipper for you will be able to sew very close to the piping cord.
  3. Trim the seam allowance to 1/4″ to reduce the overall bulk of the pencil case. Turn the pencil case to the right side out to check all the piping is sewn in place neatly and correctly.
  4. Repeat steps 1 – 7 & 1 & 3 of ‘attaching the piping’ & ‘finishing the outer layer’ to complete the open end of your tube.
  5. Congratulations your outer is not complete!

Attaching The Zipper to The Pencil Case

  1. Make sure your pencil case is now folded the right way out and insert the lining from the ‘making the lining layer’ steps into the outer layer from the ‘finishing the outer layer’ steps above.
  2. Line up the two zipper openings.
  3. Get your zipper and upzip it entirely. Insert the zipper between the two layers and hand baste in place from the outside of the pencil case.
  4. When the zipper is securely in place, carefully fold the pencil case inside out. Be sure to leave the zipper open. Starting in the middle of one side of the zipper start to sew (about 1/4” away from the zip) towards the end of the zip. Be sure to take your time and make this sew as neat, tidy and straight as you can. Repeat this step 3 more times until the zipper is securely attached.
  5. Remove the basting stitches and turn the pencil case to the right side out.

Congratulations your pencil case is complete!

What Are The Basics of a Sewing Machine?

As a beginner sewer just starting out on the quest to become one of the greats, it is important to remember you don’t need to buy a machine that has tonnes of different features and un-necessary stitches and modes.

The best sewing machine for beginners is a machine that has the below 4 key elements:

  • Performs well
  • Built with quality materials
  • Versatile
  • Easy and convenient to use

Who Are These Sewing Machines For?

I have chosen these 5 sewing machines for those of you out there with little to no sewing experience out there. It doesn’t matter if you have never seen a sewing machine before or if you have only played around on your mother’s machine on a rainy day.

These machines are user-friendly, relatively inexpensive and reliable. They are a great machine to learn the basics on and will be a great machine to keep around as a back up once you progress and advance onto a new machine. Anyone from a complete novice to an intermediate sewer will appreciate these machines.

How I Decided On My Top Sewing Machine For Beginners

There are hundreds of different brands of sewing machines out there, and even more different sewing machine models. So how did I narrow all these sewing machines down to just 5 of the best starter sewing machines?

For each machine, I took into account the below key points which are essential to a good sewing machine for beginners.

The Best Computerized Sewing Machines of 2018 – Individual Reviews

The Brother SE400

The Brother SE400 Sewing Machine

My Favourite Features of The Brother SE400

  • Automatic Threader: The automatic threader is a fantastic feature for those new to sewing or those who don’t quite have the eyesight that they used to. Simply touch one button and the needle is threaded, no more frustrating time spent in front of your machine with a magnifying glass trying to get started.
  • Automatic Threader: The automatic threader is a fantastic feature for those new to sewing or those who don’t quite have the eyesight that they used to. Simply touch one button and the needle is threaded, no more frustrating time spent in front of your machine with a magnifying glass trying to get started.
  • Upper Thread Bobbin System: The jam resistant drop in top bobbin is very reliable and quick to use. Over my testing, I never once had to go fishing for bobbin thread. The bobbins are also prepared very quickly with the bobbin winding system. I am always a little skeptical about these features, however, with the Brother SE400 I had n issues.
  • LCD Backlight & Touchscreen: The LCD backlight is very well lit and very easy to read. There are a lot of different options and features available from the touchscreen, such as designs, design editing, tutorials, and various stitches, modes and machine settings. The only problem is spending to much time looking through all of them and not actually sewing.
  • Computer Connectivity: This is without a doubt my favorite feature of the Brother SE400 machine. I consider myself quite a geek when it comes to technology so the computer connectivity is something I really appreciate. You can plug your machine directly into your computer to download new machine updates and import designs directly to your machine.

Overall Thoughts of The Brother SE400 Sewing Machine

The Brother SE400 computerized sewing and embroidery machine is a great machine for those of you out there who are tech savvy and have an ambition of becoming a professional seamstress. It is a very versatile machine that will allow you to do almost any kind of sewing you can dream of.

The machine is in the leading pack of the new generation of sewing machines and is packed full of pre-loaded features. Featuring 5 lettering fonts, 98 stitch pattern, 67 different stitching patterns, 70 built-in embroidery designs, and 8 different presser feet.

If you are up to date with your electronics and are tech savvy it is an easy machine to use, however, if you are more of a traditionalist who doesn’t use a whole lot of tech you may want to stay away from this machine. It can be frustrating to figure out how to use all the technical features and buttons. The option to upgrade and download patterns is truly fantastic. Being fairly tech savvy I found the whole process very easy, but again might be a bit of an issue for those who are not so tech savvy.

Overall it is a fantastic machine and one that will give the user a lot of versatility and options. It is lightweight, easy to store and transport. A perfect choice for the beginner who loves their tech features and computer synchronization.
